Computer Pioneer Charles Babbage
Tools for Thought: The History and Future of Mind-Expanding Technology by Howard Rheingold, The digital revolution did not begin with the teenage millionaires of Silicon Valley, claims Howard Rheingold, but with such early intellectual giants as Charles Babbage, George Boole, and John von Neumann. In a highly engaging style, Rheingold tells the story of what he calls the patriarchs, pioneers, and infonauts of the computer, focusing in particular on such pioneers as J. C. R. Licklider, Doug Engelbart, Bob Taylor, and Alan Kay. Taking the reader step by step from nineteenth-century mathematics to contemporary computing, he introduces a fascinating collection of eccentrics, mavericks, geniuses, and visionaries. The book was originally published in 1985, and Rheingold's attempt to envision computing in the 1990s turns out to have been remarkably prescient. This edition contains an afterword, in which Rheingold interviews some of the pioneers discussed in the book. As an exercise in what he calls "retrospective futurism," Rheingold also looks back at how he looked forward.
Charles Babbage Institute - The Charles Babbage Institute (also titled the Center for the History of Information Technology) is a research center specializing in the history of information technology, particularly the post-World War II history of digital computing, programming/software, and computer networking. Computer printer - A computer printer is a computer peripheral device that produces a hard copy (permanent human-readable text and/or graphics, usually on paper) from data stored in a computer connected to it. The world's first computer printer was a 19th-century mechanically driven apparatus invented by Charles Babbage for his Difference Engine. Charles P. Thacker - Charles P. (Chuck) Thacker is a distinguished engineer and computer pioneer. Charles Babbage - [Babbage]

In the last third of the 20th century computer science is not as old as physics; it lags by a couple of hundred years. Computer scientists also study other kinds of information (see data structures and data bases), and how programs should store and retrieve it. Cambridge claims to have the same computational power.
